Your period: What's normal, what's not, and what you can do about it

Women are lucky, a natural process that every month gives us information and on the internal state of our bodies, and remind us of our connection with the ebb and flow and have creative power of nature. I like to think of our time are a message to us, and we can learn much from them if we know how to listen.

Let us first about what is to speak "normal". A period is called regular if it has a consistent cyclical pattern. The average length is 28 days between menstrual although variation of anywhere from 25 to 33 days of normal. Average duration of bleeding is three to seven days, with no lumps or pain.

Heavy Flow What's happening: If your pad or tampon more than five times a day, or bleeding lasts longer than 7 days, which would be classified as difficult to change. This could be caused by fibroids or endometriosis, although some women to bleed heavily for no apparent reason. In Chinese medicine, it could (think inflammation) or emotional arousal or stress due to the heat.

What to do: change in diet may be important if it is due to fibroids or endometriosis - Eliminate dairy products, sugar and processed foods, all of which cause "wet accumulation" in the body. If it's not one of those two things, then work on your stress, regular exercise and Chinese herbs can help.

Lightflow or late menses What's up with pills and Merena IUD can reduce your flow. If you are not on hormonal contraception and you see nothing but a bit of color and require only a light panty liner or pad, it could be a thyroid problem. Otherwise, in Chinese medicine, could we call it a blood or yin deficiency due to what.

What to do: If the pill is reducing your flow and that bothers (which is not likely), try another method of contraception. If it is a thyroid problem, you may need medication. Your gyno, you can refer to an endocrinologist. Otherwise, make sure you are always at least 2-3 g of meat or fish several times a week. If your a vegetarian and do not want to add meat to bulk up on dark leafy vegetables.

Irregular cylces What's happening: Maybe your used to come every 28 days, but now come on day 21, 35, 28 and 21 back to. It could be stress, severe weight loss, extreme movement, or extreme weight gain, which can knock all your hormones to be out of balance. Drugs that work on the central nervous system, such as antidepressants, can also bring your cycle through each other. Endocrine disorders such as thyroid disease can cause irregular periods, too, as well as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). An ultrasound can show if you have ovarian cysts, and blood tests show your testosterone levels and lipids (which generally increases with PCOS).

What to do: acupuncture and herbs can help. Deficient blood, deficient qi, stagnant blood and qi stagnation - There can be many reasons for irregular periods. Most doctors want you on birth control set time limits, to regulate not necessarily fix the problem - it reveals. If the period change is suddenly no longer than three months to wait to see your gynecologist. If you have PCOS, acupuncture and herbs can help.

Cramps What's happening: In general, the cause of prostaglandins is to bring chemicals into the uterus, contractions to expel the uterine lining during the period produced. But if you have incredibly disabling cramps, it could be endometriosis to be affected 7 to 10 percent of women. The fault is due to uterine tissue grows outside the uterus, usually marked in the pelvic area.

What to do: Eliminate dairy products to reduce red meat and cheese (promoting the synthesis of prostaglandins), supplementation with fish oil (which reduces prostaglandins), vitamin C, E, B6 and magnesium. Reduce stress. Acupuncture and herbs can help.

PMS What's happening: A variety of symptoms may be present with PMS - bloating, fatigue, tearfulness, melancholy, irritability, breast tenderness, insomnia, headaches. PMS is related to high levels of estrogen and relatively low progesterone. Estrogen levels can be increased by eating, body fat, or decreased degradation of estrogen from the liver.

What to do: Eliminate dairy products, refined sugars and processed foods, reducing caffeine. Supplementation with fish oil, vitamin C, E, B6, B12, and magnesium. Reduce stress, get more sunlight, exercise. Acupuncture and herbs can help a lot.

Spotting What's happening: Low-dose birth control pills can cause breakthrough bleeding. If you are not on the pill and spotting before your period comes easily, it can sometimes be a sign of low progesterone, but it's nothing to worry about. In Chinese medicine, it is usually due to Yin deficiency or spleen.

What to do: If you are on the pill and spotting does not resolve itself in a few months, ask for a higher dose pill. Acupuncture and herbs can help to strengthen yin and qi.

In my practice, I have become convinced of the profound effect that the psyche and emotions on the menstrual cycle and our health in general have. Remember and honor how you feel. Take some time to turn inward and slow down during the period. ......
