We always know that long term stress is bad for you - the constant and prolonged release of the stress hormone cortisol is a number of serious effects, including hypertension, suppressed immunity, decreased bone density, impaired cognitive performance, and many others. However, have you noticed the amount of recent research on exactly how bad it is for you lately has it?
A recent study by the Lancet by Professor Andrew Steptoe shows work-related stress caused a 23% increase in the risk of heart attacks
Researchers in the U.S. have now the brain tissue of depressed and stressed individuals analyzed and discovered a shrinkage of the brain. It is assumed the stress blocks the compounds interfere with the formation of new nerve circuits mental and emotional function, such as the brain of stress and depression associated shrink.
More recently, Professor Sarah Berga of Emory University in Atlanta, has published her research on the relationship between stress and infertility.
SO - WHAT CAN YOU DO? You have to work. You can not give your teenager away (nice thought perhaps) and the house / garden etc will not do itself. (Roll on the invention of the self-cleaning house we say!)
The point is to find something you can do for yourself to reduce your personal stress and increase your levels of relaxation. What you will be down to personal choice, but you just have to find, plan it out and commit it. After all, would it really be as difficult to plan in a 20min walk in the park? ANSWER - not very hard, unless you already chronic stress levels and the impact on your mental well-being - what then? We would recommend you always visit your GP to get a proper diagnosis and then every good GP will recommend talking / counseling therapy. Again, you should decide who will be your decision for your treatment, you have to really feel you could trust and feel comfortable with your therapist to achieve the best results.
